But their referrals come sporadically. Unpredictably. By luck, not by design.
And when I’d ask them about their “referral strategy,” I’d get the same answers:
– “I just do great work and hope people refer me.”
– “I try to stay top-of-mind”
– “I network, but I hate asking for referrals”
That’s not a strategy. That’s hope wearing a business suit.
This is engineering malpractice applied to business development.
I come from radar missile guidance systems and complex engineering projects. When you’re guiding a missile, you don’t hope it finds the target. You build a system that makes hitting the target inevitable.
Why should referrals be any different?
Why This Matters to Me Personally

I’ve watched too many brilliant professionals undersell themselves. Underprice themselves. Struggle to fill their pipelines. Not because they lack skill, but because they lack systems.
They know WHAT to do (network, provide value, build relationships).
They struggle with HOW to do it systematically, consistently, and scalably.
That gap – between knowing and doing – is where most professionals waste years of their careers.
When I close that gap for someone, they don’t just get more referrals. They get freedom. Security. Choice. Confidence. Control.
That’s what drives me every single day.
My Background: From Missiles to Markets
Over four decades, I’ve worked with IBM, Disney, Cartier, Vodafone, Marriott, Sony Pictures, and Adobe. I’ve built systems for some of the world’s most sophisticated brands. I served as Chair of the UK & EU IAB Search Council, where we set the standards for an entire industry.
Here’s what I learned: The best professionals don’t get referrals by accident. They engineer them.
Not through manipulation. Not through awkward asks. Not through being “salesy.”
Through systematic relationship capital deposits, make others the obvious choice.
How I Do This (My Mission)
I engineer referral systems through systematic relationship capital deposits.
Not through networking tips. Not through awkward asks. Not through being “salesy.”
The Contrarian Truth I Discovered
In 2019, I began researching what I call “The Referral Paradox” – the counterintuitive discovery that the harder you make it to refer you (through qualification, specificity, and value-first positioning), the more valuable those referrals become.
Everyone teaches: “Make it easy to refer you! Tell people exactly who to send you!”
That’s backwards.
The best referrals come from relationships where:
– You’ve proven your value first (not asked for theirs)
– You’ve made them successful (not pitched them)
– You’ve given strategically (not scattered effort randomly)
– You’ve qualified them (not treated everyone equally)
As Dale Carnegie wrote in How to Win Friends and Influence People: “You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get people interested in you.”
But Carnegie was writing in 1936. He didn’t have the tools to systematize “becoming interested in other people” at scale.
I do.
The STARS Framework™: My Systematic Methodology
I’ve developed a 5-stage engineering process for turning ad-hoc networking into predictable referral generation:
– SCAN: Audit your network objectively using the 4-quadrant Scorecard (find the gaps you don’t see)
– TARGET: Design your ideal network strategically with the 4-layer model (blueprint the system)
– ACTIVATE: Shine your Stars with Catalysts systematically (execute value delivery consistently)
– REFINE: Track results and optimize relentlessly with 5 essential metrics (data-driven improvement)
– SCALE: Amplify through systems exponentially (multiply without burning out)
What Makes My Approach Different
I combine three disciplines that most people separate:
1. Theorist: I’ve developed the contrarian framework (The Referral Paradox)
2. Architect: I design the system using 40 years of engineering complex solutions
3. Engineer: I built it with you using the Star Referrer platform
Most consultants give you theory or tools. I give you both, plus implementation.
Star Referrer is the platform – the technology that makes relationship capital deposits systematic instead of ad-hoc.
The STARS Framework™ is the methodology – the engineered process for turning your network into a referral engine.
My consulting is the implementation – the hands-on guidance that turns knowing into doing.
What I’m Building (My Vision)
A world where premium B2B professionals generate referrals as predictably as they deliver their expertise.
I’m not just building a platform or teaching a methodology. I’m creating a movement.
The Transformation I’m Engineering
From ad-hoc networkers → Referral engineers
From hoping → Measuring
From inconsistent → Predictable
From stuck at 2-5 referrals/quarter → Scaling to 20-50 referrals/month
The Future I See
I’m building a community of Referral Engineers – professionals who:
– Reject networking tips in favor of systematic frameworks
– Track metrics, not feelings
– Optimize based on data, not guesswork
– Give value first, then engineer reciprocity
– Build referral machines that compound over time
The old way: “Do great work and hope people refer you.”
The new way: “Build a referral system that makes referring you the obvious choice.”
When a client tells me they went from 3 referrals per quarter to 15 referrals per month, that’s not just a metric. That’s freedom. Security. Choice. Confidence.
That’s the future I’m building. One systematic referral engineer at a time.
Who I Am vs. What I’m Not
I’m not a networking coach. Networking coaches teach you to “work the room” and collect business cards.
I’m not a sales trainer. Sales trainers teach you to overcome objections and close deals.
I’m a systems architect. I build referral machines for professionals who:
– Have deep expertise but hate cold outreach
– Believe relationships matter, but approach them ad hoc
– Want predictable pipelines without feeling “salesy”
– Need engineering, not inspiration
My Philosophy
“Referrals by design, not by luck.”
If you’re waiting for referrals to happen, you’re at the mercy of randomness.
If you’re building referral systems, you’re in control of predictability.
The difference between professionals generating 2 referrals per quarter and 20 referrals per quarter isn’t effort. It’s a system.
What gets measured gets managed. What gets managed gets optimized. What gets optimized gets scaled.
The Invitation: Join the Movement
If you’re tired of ad-hoc networking…
If you’re done hoping referrals show up…
If you believe referrals should be engineered, not extracted…
Then you’re ready to become a Referral Engineer.
I can’t solve every business problem. But I can close the gap between knowing and doing when it comes to systematic referral generation.
I’ve built the framework. The platform. The methodology. The support system.
All you need to bring is:
– A decent network (even 20-30 solid relationships is enough to start)
– Satisfied clients (people who would recommend you if prompted)
– Willingness to give value first
– Commitment to consistency
– Belief that systems beat inspiration
Let me show you how to build a referral system that works while you sleep.
Because your expertise deserves predictability, not hope.
